This bus tour explores spaces featured in Singapore's early defences such as the significance of names like Fullerton and Battery Road, the development of the harbour and its importance to Singapore, the development of the volunteer forces in general, shipping (and the Straits Steamship Co — which provided many of the evacuation ships) and also the site of the SSNVR (Straits Settlements Naval Volunteer Reserve) and stories of the evacuation. This is a foot trail programme, and the participants will be covering the following spots: Battery Road (volunteer units / Fort Fullerton), Ocean Financial Centre and Collyer Quay (shipping, harbour, Clifford Pier), Telok Ayer Market Area, Singapore Navy Museum.

Join us on this guided bus tour to explore Singapore’s naval defence during World War II and how it has evolved over time. The tour begins at Johore Battery along Cosford Road, a key coastal defence site during the Japanese Occupation. Learn about the significance of the site before journeying along Changi Beach, which fronts a once important sea route leading to the British Naval Base in Sembawang, a major player in the defence of the Far East. The journey concludes at the Singapore Navy Museum, where participants can view ship models from the wartime period and learn about the development of modern naval warfare. This tour was curated by Dr John Kwok, a professional historian, and the tour is conducted by Dr Ian Li, a military historian.

When food was scarce, ingenuity kept hope alive. Sustenance & Sacrifice brings WWII-era survival food to life through an immersive cooking demonstration and collaborative workshop led by Chef Suria of Dapur Cahaya and Chef Yeo Min from the Museum of Food, as they reimagine a humble wartime ingredient – tapioca, into dishes that tell stories of sacrifice and strength. By engaging with history through food, participants gain a deeper appreciation of how resilience, solidarity, and the will to defend Singapore were lived experiences.

Learn more about the life and stories of Allied prisoners-of-war (POWs) in Singapore during the Japanese Occupation (1942-45) by visiting of the WW2-related sites. What was once a concentration camp for Australian POWs is now part of the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) Selarang Camp, while the old Changi Prison Walls in the vicinity has been preserved as a National Monument. The tour will end at the Changi Chapel and Museum, which tells the story of the POWs and civilians interned in Changi Prison camp during the Japanese Occupation.

What would you do if you and your way of life are threatened by invasion? Learn more about the defence of Singapore during the Japanese invasion in February 1942. In this specially curated tour, participants will visit the Former Ford Factory to learn about the defence of Singapore, why it failed to halt the enemy, the events that led to the British surrender, and where it happened. The tour will also include the must-visit Kranji War Cemetery to learn about the brave men and women who took part in the defence of Singapore and paid the ultimate price.
